Saint Oscar Romero
Oscar Romero was ‘canonised’ on 14 October 2018. He is now known as ‘Saint Oscar Romero’.
Like Jesus, Oscar Romero knew he was risking his life when he spoke out against the things he knew were wrong. Romero is remembered for his courage, his faith and his great love for the poor.
In El Salvador, where Oscar Romero grew up, there is a tradition of producing colourful crucifixes. The bright decorations have a figure of Jesus at the centre but also include images of the local community set in a Salvadoran landscape. They have become known as Romero crosses in England and Wales.
To celebrate Oscar Romero becoming a saint some children in Year 2 created their own Romero Crosses.
Little Way Week
Little Way Week is inspired by St Thérèse of Lisieux, patron of mission. As a child St Thérèse dreamed of being a missionary. With age she understood that very few of us are called to make big and radical gestures, but that through small, loving actions we too can deliver God’s love to the world.
During this week the children thought about good deeds they could do each day, including thinking about children overseas. The good deeds were recorded on each finger of the hand to celebrate Little Way Week.
We also thought about and remembered the words of Saint Thérèse… ‘Little things done out of love are those that delight the heart of Christ.’
All classes regularly take part in collective worship in the class, year group and as a whole school.
